Don’t Worry Be Happy… … … … For Others

John Paul Derrybery

We are inundated with ads, propaganda, and new stories about how happy other people are in our society. How great other people are in life, and it creates this tug on us to become jealous, angry, or sad it's not us. So we sit around and stew about why can't it be me experiencing the joy of life. It; 's almost as if a lot of our culture is set up to make us feel less than. To have us questioning ourselves and searching for answers to how to be happy. Possibly pushing us to consume more information, media, and product to quench that back of the mind thought, "I'm not good enough- happiness will remain out of reach. It's a horrible place to be, but there is a way out of the ungodly sad forest.

It's called don't worry, be happy…. …. …. … … For Others! A quick Friday trip out of the office to swing by my wife's school jolted this fact to the forefront of my mind. She had just completed a big project, and I wanted to support her. Watching her, her fellow teacher, and their students float on cloud nine during the morning put me in a great mood all day. I was happy for them, their achievement, and their energy. I'm good at being happy for others, but I didn't always possess that skill. In my quest to find happiness, I hated other people's ability to experience that.

It's an ugly place to be, and we seem to have more and more people in that realm of chasing happiness and not realizing being happy for other people makes us better. Being happy for other people doesn't diminish us; it emboldens us, connects us, inspires us, and, most importantly, makes us happy. Happiness is just as contagious as sadness. Yes, misery loves company, but so does joy. This is why we should teach others and ourselves to be joyful for what others are accomplishing. It's incredible and fun, and the length of time the person we support feels happy. We should want that for them, for us, and for everyone.

I get it; at some point, we drilled everything in competition, sports, earning the first chair in the band, leading in the play, and so on. And being happy for others is counterintuitive to how we think. But it's the most healthy thing that can happen to us. I know I have surrounded myself with people who are happy for me, and in return, I found I was happier. This made me happy for them and others, increasing their happiness. So you want to find one key to a happier life. , be happy for others.
