Sunday Night With John: Emotional Beauty

I have spoken in numerous places over the years. With the goal of building my public speaking portfolio, I made a decision years ago to speak anywhere. But, never in my wildest dreams did I think that have lead me to Capri College, a cosmetology school, in Cedar Rapids, IA.  I really should stop being surprised where I speak as I am constantly being taught emotions are a part of every job and every setting. I was lucky enough to be asked this week to speak with students that will be shaping people’s beauty in the near future. What does my message, Share Emotions, Emotions Matter mean to a room full of students whose main job is to create a new look, cut, or style for their costumers?  Let me try to explain.  How many of us have had our moods change after a great or awful haircut?  Or, get a perk in your mood when you find a perfect shirt to wear for an upcoming event?  All of us, that’s what I thought.  As I talked with Capri College students about my message, Share Emotion, Emotions Matter, I challenged them to approach every appointment as if it might be the moment their customer finds themselves at a crossroad. Whether that crossroad is a job interview, a first date, or a graduation.  If they took care of their customer in the moment and help them to feel better about themselves, just maybe the customer’s life could change. Maybe they would help to instill confidence or give them an extra pep in their step that might lead to something meaningful in their lives.

I realized walking out of Capri College that was true advice for everyone. If we took care of the emotions of the people right in front of us, the more we would see people achieve emotional beauty.
